Bloody Sunday Anniversary

January 30 is the anniversary of the “Bloody Sunday” incident in Northern Ireland, where 13 unarmed protestors were shot dead by British paratroopers. The incident brought worldwide attention to the crisis in Northern Ireland and triggered ongoing violence.

U2 famously wrote a tribute song in 1983 called Sunday Bloody Sunday.

I wrote my own poem to celebrate the event on the 51st anniversary of the Bloody Sunday uprising.

Bloody Sunday

Bloody Sunday, a day of pain,
When violence filled the streets again,
In Derry, where the marchers walked,
And soldiers fired, in their mock.

With peace and justice, as their call,
They marched for rights, for one and all,
But gunfire echoed, shattered peace,
And 14 souls, did forever cease.

The wounded, lay upon the ground,
Innocent victims, of war’s round,
Their families mourn, their cause ignored,
While anger simmered, in Northern Ireland’s core.

The dead, now heroes, in the eyes,
Of those who fight, for freedom’s prize,
Their memory, lives on, in our hearts,
A reminder, that violence tears apart.

Oh Bloody Sunday, a day of shame,
A symbol, of conflict, that’s insane,
May peace prevail, in Northern Ireland,
And justice and love, be forever gained.
